After being freed, Torque attempts to fight his way to freedom while confronting his own personal demons, all while attempting to remember what really happened to his family. Shortly after he arrives in Abbot State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, off the coast of Maryland, an earthquake hits the island, resulting in the prison being attacked by supernatural threats from the island's past. The Suffering centers on the story of Torque, a prisoner on death row for murdering his ex-wife and two children, a crime that he possesses no memory of committing. Interactive Entertainment, the current owner of the IP after acquiring publisher Midway Games' assets following the latter company's bankruptcy in 2009. In 2017, the game was released on GOG.com by Warner Bros. A port was also planned for the GameCube, but was cancelled. In Europe, it was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in May, and for PC in July. In North America, the game was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in March 2004, and for PC in June of the same year.
